MACHINERY REPAIRMAN COURSE PACK
1. MACHINERY REPAIRMAN COURSE
In this course, you’ll learn how to perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on assigned equipment and in support of other ships, requiring the skillful use of lathes, milling machines, boring mills, grinders, power hacksaws, drill presses, and other machine tools; portable machinery; and handtools and measuring instruments found in a machine shop.” That is a very general statement not meant to define completely the types of skills and supporting knowledge that an MR is expected to have in the different paygrades. The job of restoring machinery to good working order, ranging from the fabrication of a simple pin or bushing to the complete rebuilding of an intricate gear system, requires skill of the highest order at each task level. Often, in the absence of dimensional drawings or other design information, an MR must depend upon ingenuity and know-how to successfully fabricate a repair part.
2. MACHINERY REPAIRMAN 2 & 3 COURSE
This Training Manual (TRAMAN) and Nonresident Training Course (NRTC) form a self-study package to teach the theoretical knowledge and mental skills needed by the Machinery Repairman Third Class and Machinery Repairman Second Class. To most effectively train Machinery Repairmen, this package may be combined with on-the-job training to provide the necessary elements of practical experience and observation of techniques demonstrated by more senior Machinery Repairmen. Completion of the NRTC provides the usual way of satisfying the requirements for completing the TRAMAN. The set of assignments in the NRTC includes learning objectives and supporting questions designed to help the student learn the materials in the TRAMAN.
3. MACHINERY REPAIRMAN 2, 1 & C COURSE
Questions and Answers. Naval courses may include several types of questions—multiple-choice, true-false, matching, etc. The questions are not grouped by type but by subject matter. They are presented in the same general sequence as the textbook material upon which they are based. This presentation is designed to preserve continuity of thought, permitting step-by-step development of ideas.
4. MACHINERY REPAIRMAN 3 COURSE

5. BASIC MACHINES
In completing this training course, you will demonstrate a knowledge of the subject matter by correctly answering questions on the following: concepts and principles of operation of basic mechanical devices, and the construction and method of operation of common mechanical devices, such as engines and transmissions.
6. FLUID POWER
In completing this training course, you will demonstrate a knowledge of the subject matter by correctly answering questions on the following: fundamental physics as appropriate to fluids at rest and in motion; types and characteristics of hydraulic and pneumatic fluids; major components of basic fluid power systems and diagrams used to illustrate these systems; proper procedures and precautions for handling and replacing lines, connectors, and sealing devices; proper procedures for eliminating contaminants; purpose, operation, application of pumps, reservoirs, strainers, filters, accumulators, flow control and measuring devices, directional control valves, and actuators; arrangement and operation of representative fluid power systems including the function and interrelationship of major components.
7. LUBRICANTS AND HYDRAULIC FLUIDS MANUAL
This manual is intended to be a practical guide to lubrication with enough technical detail to allow personnel to recognize and easily discern differences in performance properties specified in manufacturers’ product literature so that the proper lubricant for a particular application is selected. It describes basic characteristic properties of oils, hydraulic fluids, greases, solid lubricants, environmentally acceptable lubricants, and their additives. It examines the mechanics of hydrodynamic, boundary, extreme pressure, and elastohydrodynamic lubrication to protect against surface deterioration.
